ResourcesArticles. The menu at top left will take you to some articles I’ve written on topics relevant to legal professionals. More articles will be added over time, so keep checking back. Lawyers’ Assistance Programs (LAPs). Almost every state bar association in the U.S. provides a LAP for its members. These programs vary in the services they provide, but they are all designed to help lawyers access help for a variety of difficulties. For example, if you’d like to talk to someone about finding a local AA meeting or a good counselor, your state LAP can be a good starting point. Ask about their rules of confidentiality if you have concerns about using their services. Law Office Management Assistance Programs (LOMAPs). Some state bar associations offer LOMAP programs to assist their members with the business aspects of running a solo office or small firm. Since this information isn’t typically offered in law school, many lawyers encounter difficulties when it comes to managing and marketing their businesses. Call your state bar association to find out if your state offers these services. Ask about their rules of confidentiality if you have concerns about using them. Mental Health Difficulties. Depression, anxiety, and substance abuse (to name a few) are common among legal professionals because your work is inherently stressful. If problems like these are interfering with your work or home life, you should immediately seek assistance from a licensed mental health professional in your neighborhood. Left untreated, these problems can be bad for your business, hurt your clients, distance you from family and friends, or even become life threatening. Consult your family physician and/or state LAP if you need help accessing services. If you are experiencing a medical emergency such as an impulse to commit suicide, please call 911, go to your local emergency room, or look up “Crisis Intervention” in your local yellow pages and call a number provided there.
